Eva in London • Eva à Londres - Trafalgar Square

Eva is spending 6 months in London... I jumped on the opportunity to create an environmental portrait in the iconic location of Trafalgar Square:

Beyond the carefully selected location and focal length required to get the composition (long lens for perspective compression), chosing the right time of day (evening in Summer) was also key to get a suitable lighting... but we were particularly lucky with the dramatic sky and the sun beam illuminating the square. We "just" had to be patient and "work" around the hordes of tourists walking in front of the statues - or queuing to climb them...

If the above portrait is my favorite by far, I also like the below variations (for which unfortunately the sky was no longer quite as gorgeous):

- In "James Bond" action mode / En mode "action" - James Bond...

Pensive...

Regal / Royale...

Incidentally, this series is a pretty good illustration of how relatively small changes in position (distance and angle vs. subject) and focal length can lead to a great variation of results: Big Ben appears smaller or larger, in one place or another, by just moving a few steps backward or forward, left or right, and adjusting the focal length (zoom) to maintain the composition constant. Also, the impact of depth of field (driven by the aperture) is very significant: on the first portrait, taken at f/10, Big Ben is quite blurred. It's much sharper on the other ones, taken at f/16 (and higher ISO to have a high enough speed to have sharp images even though they were taken hand-held).

More to come, stay tuned! A suivre !
