La Nouvelle Orléans était la dernière étape de mon « road trip » américain en bus pendant les vacances de Noël 1987. (Je venais de Floride – cf. ces quelques cartes postales...)

Néanmoins, j’ai ressenti que c’est la nuit que l’âme de la Nouvelle Orléans brillait le plus fort, tant dehors qu’à l’intérieur, comme dans ses tramways – même s’ils n’étaient pas explicitement nommés « désir »...

Bien que de nombreuses boites de jazz sentaient le piège à touriste servant un son aseptisé à des oreilles complaisantes...

Après une seule photo, j’ai décidé d’éteindre mon flash – j’ai immédiatement réalisé qu’il annihilait toute la subtilité de l’atmosphère du lieu. J’ai décidé de faire confiance à la lumière ambiante seule – choix courageux étant donné la piètre sensibilité de mon film, et la faible luminosité de mon objectif « budget étudiant »...
Après quelques semaines de patience pour faire développer le film, j’ai pu enfin voir le résultat. Je n’ai pas été déçu : en regardant mes diapos, je me sentais à nouveau transporté dans ce lieu magique, par ses chaudes vibrations...

Quelques heures plus tard, je devais sauter dans le bus qui, en 36 heures non-stop, me ramènerait sur mon campus de Philadelphie...
